Masquerade Prom is HOT in New York City this year!

Article submitted by the Masquerade Costumes Store / Halloween Adventure Times Square:

We here at Halloween Adventure 43rd Street have made one BIG observation this past week:

Masquerade masks are definitely IN with the high school and teenage crowd here in the Times Square area. Masquerade Prom, masquerade school cruises, masquerade Sweet Sixteens (and Fifteens). That means it's been a very busy week for us here at Masquerade Costumes!

Floor managers Gabby and Oriana report that at least 3 schools in the area are having masquerade themed proms (junior and/or senior proms), according to information they've gathered from teenage shoppers this week. Oriana says that masks are being bought by both male and female students. "It's not just the girls," said Oriana, "but the females have been more into feathers."

When asked what sort of masks the teens have been buying most, store manager Stella reports "Mardi Gras, definitely." She goes on, "I've been getting groups of kids in here all day buying Mardi Gras masks. Definitely." Stella said she would certainly call this a feeding frenzy.

Gabby spoke a bit about the development of the masquerade mask popularity among the teenagers. She said the mad dash for masks this week started with a small burst of student shopper activity on Monday, and by Thursday the rush was in full swing.

Gabby also added that she has noticed the masquerade mask popularity gradually increasing with young people since New Years this year.

The masquerade rush has been keeping the Masquerade staff on their toes this prom season, and Stella and crew have been in top form throughout it all!

Warm Weather in NYC and Mermaid Make-up Tutorial Videos

Warm weather has finally arrived here in New York City. And not a moment too soon! And once warm weather rolls around, we start to think about warm weather activities.... like June's Mermaid Parade at Coney Island!

And, as we at New York Costumes were thinking about summer time and underwater dress up, we decided to do a bit of searching for video tutorials to give us some inspiration for the 2010 Mermaid Parade.

For a shiny underwater effect, this sea nymph make-up tutorial involves use of glitter and sequins. This one is very thorough.

And a fun video tutorial / demo on how to do Mermaid make-up. Includes using mesh netting to create a "scale" effect with the make-up application. Great to bookmark for the Mermaid parade.

And we costume people over here at the East Village Halloween Adventure shop are soon expected a big shipment of sea creatures... costume accessory sea creatures, that is. They'll be joining the Shell bras and coconut bras and the hula skirts to help folks prepare for the Mermaid parade. Bring on the summer time!

Bead Giving Season is a-Coming in! Mardi Gras!

Mardi Gras is coming up quick, and the beads are rolling in at New York Costumes. When it's Carnival time, you know you've got to get your beads on.

And, as a matter of fact, we just got a whole new delivery of Mardi Gras beads. Check 'um out:

Mardi Gras Party Beads. These come in multiple single-color strands of beads, with the various strands being in different colors.

In a packaged set, there are 12 strands (necklaces), which include strands in colors: green, purple, gold, red, and blue. In other words, Mardi Gras colors and then some!

Mardi Gras Beads. Not unlike the "Mardi Gras Party Beads," but these packages sets of beaded necklaces contain ONLY Mardi Gras colors. So that is 12 strands of only green, purple, and gold.

Beads are of the 7.5 mm size and come on necklaces that are 33 inches long.

Mardi Gras Braided Beads. Three strands of the classic Mardi Gras colored beads - green, gold, purple - braided together to make a multi-colored necklace. For extra decadence and for that extra special bead-earning reveler. Classic style with some added pizzazz.

Disco Ball Mardi Gras Beads. Mardi Gras beads but with each individual bead in the shape of a mini disco ball. These beads are a little larger and the strands are a tiny bit heavier.

So many variations are available on the classic green, gold, and purple beads. Imagine digging through piles and piles of these shiny beaded strands. That's what we've been doing over here in the East Village at the costume shop. And this is only the tip of the iceberg! Onward into Carnival Season!

ColorFlame Candles. Light up my life!

Just in at New York Costumes, some neat little birthday candles with some extra special flare. Flare as in style, and flare as in flame!

ColorFlame Candles burn with flames in a variety of colors. Light the wick, and watch the flame light up in either red, purple, blue, green, or orange.

These candles come in sets of 12, with two of each color and a plastic holder for each candle. Each candle is 2" tall and burns for approximately 8 minutes.

A great way to add flare and style to a birthday cake, celebratory baked goods, or other project calling for tiny candles.

Celebrity Sighting at New York Costumes!

Scanned from the Daily News, Wednesday, Jan 6. The caption mentions that Ashlee Simpson and her husband got these masks with a "little help from a downtown costume shop." That would be us at New York Costumes, the downtown Halloween Adventure.

People's blood isn't for drinking, but Blood Energy Potion is!

People's blood isn't for drinking, but Blood Energy Potion is!

Blood Energy Potion is a new, creepy product that just arrived at New York Costumes. This drinkable, fruit punch flavored packet of blood-like goodness has similar nutrients to real blood and is at the same time a "succulent source of electrolytes."

Rip it open, pour it all over your face, and lap it up. That is, if gore in on the menu for your fright fest or carnival of blood!

NOT to be used for transfusions or intravenously, but great for making a bloody mess that you can consume.

From your humble narrator:
Bottom's up!

Mardi Gras vs Masquerade Ball. The difference matters.

In honor of Mardi Gras 2010, Oriana (of 43rd street Masquerade) speaks about the difference between "Mardi Gras" parties and "masquerade" parties:

She would like to remind readers and party-makers that while a Mardi Gras theme party may be a masquerade party, not all masquerade parties are Mardi Gras parties. Both Mardi Gras and masquerades often call for elaborate masks and finery, but the Mardi Gras party has a more specific focus; Mardi Gras conjures up images of jesters, beads, Bourbon Street, New Orleans, green and gold and purple, and drunken revelry.

On the other hand, "masquerade," while technically defined as any party where masks are worn, often calls up images of a masquerade ball - finely dressed ladies and gentlemen dancing and adorned in Victorian style, chandeliers, ornate decorations, and high formality.

Oriana suggests that shoppers and party-makers have a good idea of whether they want their parties to have a "Mardi Gras" feel or a "masquerade ball" sort of vibe. She then suggests that shoppers use the most appropriate terminology that will help them in their search for masks and party supplies.

Is your masked theme party a Mardi Gras bash or a masquerade ball?

Or is it somewhere in between? Even if the masquerade party to are planning doesn't fit into the categories of a ball or a Mardi Gras bash, you can use these examples as ends of a spectrum to describe the party to are creating. It will help you shop, and it will help your sales associates to serve you better.
